- Follows procedures required to handle both non-sterile and sterilized instruments
- Takes, records, observes, and measures vital signs
- Archives files as needed
- Utilizes Universal Precautions (OSHA standards)
- Follows procedures to complete spore testing for heat sterilizers (Autoclave/Statim)
- Uses lead apron appropriately
- Considers material characteristics and properties for restorative and dental procedures and armamentarium setups
- Applies EMR system to record keeping
- Dons and wears personal safety radiation badge consistently
- Adheres to state and federal laws, recommendations, and regulations in the provision of oral health care
- Practices and adheres to patient's right to privacy according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations
- Assists dentist chair side during procedures
- Uses safe radiation exposure practices
- Retrieves patient files and records
- Serves as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
- Disinfects the operatory between patients
- Prepares treatment trays with armamentarium in sequence of use and delivery position
- Selects and prepares armamentarium for chairside dental and/or emergency dental procedures, including but not limited to amalgam restorations, bleaching/whitening, composite restorations, crown and bridge preparation/cementation, dental dam application, dentures (partial, full, and/or immediate), desensitization of the teeth, endodontic therapy, extractions, fluoride application, implants, incision and drainage, occlusal equilibration/adjustment, oral examination, oral prophylaxis, periodontal procedures
- Updates files as needed
- Rotates expendable supplies according to the expiration date
- Applies the ADAA code of ethics in all professional endeavors
- Uses four-handed dentistry concepts in all treatment procedures
- Participates in community events
- Reports discrepancies in supplies received to appropriate personnel
- Follows the guidelines in the Dental Room Turn Around SOP
- Recognizes and notates any abnormal findings in the head and neck region, including but not limited to: oral manifestations of systemic diseases. oral pathologic conditions. periodontal diseases and conditions of mucosa
- Seats and prepares a patient, positions and adjusts equipment
- Maintains equipment/instruments, including nitrous oxide and oxygen tanks, rotary instruments, traps and suction lines
- Records treatment and prescriptions (e.g., medication, instructions) on chart
- Follows pregnancy radiation protocols and procedures
- Applies software settings according to the patient's body type and produces a diagnostic quality panorex film
- Removes blood and debris from instruments prior to bagging or wrapping
- Follows pre-autoclave instrument preparation protocol: bags, dates, wrap
- Complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines
- Orders supplies as appropriate to inventory and budget using appropriate software (MediBuy, Smart)
- Maintains and controls supplies
- Assists with administration of and/or applies local anesthetics and topical anesthetic to site of injection
- Uses correct Operatory Opening Procedures
- Records patient compliance or failure to comply with treatment plan
- Records recommended treatment and patient's acceptance or refusal of the treatment
- Returns files in an appropriate and predictable routine
- Reviews and updates health/dental history
- Identifies medical conditions that can cause medical emergencies or cause complications during dental care
- Participates in annual inventory of unit equipment
- Reviews supplies, when received, for accuracy
- Follows emergency protocols including maintenance of emergency equipment and kit for the dental office (e.g., AED)
