- Investigates complex incidents, to include but not limit to narcotics trafficking, money laundering, sexual assaults and homicide
- Directs collection, preparation, and handling of evidence and personal property of prisoners
- Trains and evaluates assigned personnel; assists with training and orientation of new employees

- Monitors the prisoners in custody at the department’s holding facility and ensures transportation to and from court

- Handles evidence such as weapons, body fluids, etc.
- Conducts follow-up investigations that require a technical knowledge of police and security operations, techniques and procedures
- Interprets, conveys, and ensures implementation of agency policies, procedures, and methods; ensure that personnel have clear guidelines of authority and responsibility
- Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigation of citizen complaints as necessary
- Collects forensic evidence including physical evidence, fingerprints, DNA (trace and comparison) and documents
- Reviews all investigation reports and makes recommendations and suggestions to officers
- Serves as first level supervisor/Watch Commander for an assigned shift by preparing and administering briefings; assigning patrol beats; supervising and directing sworn and non-sworn staff and activities on assigned shift; conducting personnel, equipment, and building inspections
- Participates in budget development and administration; prepares and plans budget requests for assigned operations and special details; participate in the development of grant applications and the administration of grants
- Assumes responsibility for assigned collateral functions including special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities
- Supervises and participates with the initial investigations which occur on a shift by determining assignments and the appropriate response to the variety of calls and provides technical advice on how to respond in certain situations
- Reviews contents of written orders to ensure adherence to legal requirements
- Displays tactical awareness during routine activities
- Prepares work schedules to cover shifts; conducts briefing sessions for assigned shift
- Assists in the formulation and implementation of plans for the provision of police services during special community events
- Meets with civic, educational, and community groups to develop community programs and events, and to discuss law enforcement subjects

- Supervises specialized teams and services including Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT), Field Training Officers, Vehicle Abatement Unit, Equestrian Unit, Canine Unit, and related assignments
- Reviews all patrol generated reports and evaluates, prioritizes, and assigns them to detectives for follow-up investigations
- Applies knowledge of individual rights of in-custody persons (e.g., duty of care may exist to provide or summon medical assistance for subjects)
- Ensures subordinates and superiors are promptly informed of matters which affect their work, attitudes and morale
- Operates and instructs subordinates in the operation of rescue-fire-fighting apparatus in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions
