- Removes asbestos or lead from surfaces, using hand or power tools such as scrapers, vacuums, or high pressure sprayers
- Performs air monitoring and final air/visual clearance ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements using comprehensive knowledge and understanding of internal and external policies and procedures
- Complies with regulations regarding abatement, remediation and waste disposal
- Builds work area enclosures
- Operates or oversees the operation of a variety of equipment related to asbestos abatement such as breather units, monitoring devices and vacuums
- Identifies asbestos, lead, or other hazardous materials to be removed, using monitoring devices
- Separates scrap or waste materials for recycling, reuse, or environmentally sound disposal
- Removes or limits contamination following emergencies involving hazardous substances
- Maintains daily site activity documentation; reviews on-site documentation
- Organizes or tracks the locations of hazardous items in landfills
- Inspects heavy equipment before use
- Prepares hazardous material for removal or storage
- Cleans mold-contaminated sites by removing damaged porous materials or thoroughly cleaning all contaminated nonporous materials
- Sorts specialized hazardous waste at landfills or disposal centers, following proper disposal procedures
- Drives trucks or other heavy equipment to convey contaminated waste to designated sea or ground locations
- Takes bulk material samples(ex. mold) and air sampling when necessary
- Applies chemicals to walls in order to remove lead-based paint
- Complies with prescribed safety procedures or federal laws regulating waste disposal methods
- Applies bioremediation techniques to hazardous wastes to allow naturally occurring bacteria to break down toxic substances
- Packages, stores, or moves irradiated fuel elements in the underwater storage basins of nuclear reactor plants, using machines or equipment
- Follows asbestos removal, applies new environmental safe materials on pipings, fittings, valves, ducts and any other hot or cold surfaces for the purpose of thermal control
- Assembles scaffolding and seals off work area using plastic sheeting and duct tape
- Processes e-waste, such as computer components containing lead or mercury
- Uploads baskets of irradiated elements onto machines that insert fuel elements into canisters and secure lids
- Removes asbestos and lead, respectively, from buildings and structures, particularly those that are being renovated or demolished
- Maintains records of all inspections and tests at each site
- Mixes or pours concrete into forms to encase waste material for disposal
- Assists in writing of specifications for abatement of asbestos and selection of contractors
- Establishes safe environments through the professional demolition and removal of hazardous buildings affected by asbestos
- Operates machines or equipment to remove, package, store, or transport loads of waste materials
- Operates sandblasters, high-pressure water sprayers, and other tools to remove paint
- Strips the walls, packages the residue and paint chips, and place them in approved bags or containers for proper disposal
- Supports the handling and removal of asbestos and other hazardous waste material under OSHA and EPA guidelines in addition to other federal, state and local regulations
- Ensures that precautions are utilized and procedures followed to prevent asbestos from becoming airborne
- Follows procedures prescribed by Regulation to control fibers released from asbestos containing material in a building by encapsulation, encasement, or removal
- Cleans contaminated equipment or areas for re-use, using detergents or solvents, sandblasters, filter pumps, or steam cleaners
- Completes and maintains records as required to document asbestos abatement activities
- Uses materials such as tape, vinyl covering, caulking and/or paint, to provide temporary asbestos containment
- Protects sensitive equipment
- Ensures asbestos-contained water is disposed of in compliance with regulatory requirements
