- Crawler and Wheel-Type Cranes, Derricks, Piledrivers, Overhead and Bridge and Gantry Cranes, Forklifts, Identify name and uses of various cranes and derricks, Perform preventive maintenance, using proper oils and greases, and make minor adjustments, Assist in adjusting frictions, brakes, and clutches, Operate using the controls, their importance in proper operation, and movement of the machine for the safety of other employees, working proper distance from overhead power lines, and other equipment working near the machine, Apply technical knowledge and assist during major overhauls while working with the operator, heavy duty repairperson and welder, Calculate the proper loads that the machine and cables will safely handle, Acquire knowledge in operating a live boom and regular operations, Give and receive proper hand signals, Identify name and uses of piledriving equipment, Assist in the programming of LMls and computer aided accessories for safe and proper set-up and crane operation.
- Skip and Air Tugger Hoists, Elevators, etc.: Assist in making proper adjustments on engine-driven hoists and learn to make repairs and adjustments on air tuggers and air compressors.
- Cable ways: Operate cableways and make adjustments
- Motor Crane Driver (Single and Combination Vehicles >26001 lbs.): Drive a truck crane and place it for most convenient operation of the crane. Study the Federal CDL laws and obtain a CDL license.
- Tracked Equipment: Operate dinkey and locomotive engines.
- Use of Grade Instruments and Plans: Use instruments and read plans for making grades, Read and set grade stakes as well as read plans and instructions.
- Soil Solidification: Use principles and methods of soil solidification and handle specialty equipment designed for same.
- Miscellaneous Equipment: Operate, service, and adjust all types of pumps, Operate and maintain all pumping equipment, such as pump crete machine, concrete pump, gunite machine, etc., Assist in installing, operating, and maintaining well-point systems, Operate, service, and adjust all types of mechanical heaters, Operate, service, and adjust all types of electric generating plants, Operate, service, and adjust all other types of equipment.
- Auxiliary Equipment: Assist in rigging and operating attachments used on universal equipment.
- Maintenance - Cutting and Burning - Greases and Oils: Use various welders and welding equipment., Assist in making minor repairs and adjustments, Assist in welding and cutting, Gain knowledge and use appropriate greases and oils.
- Excavator Operation
- Operates excavator, which digs holes and trenches and removes and transports earth, gravel, and dumps soil, sand, ore, rock. gravel, and industrial byproducts, and other such materials in stockpiles or transport trucks
- Starts engine, moves hand and foot levers to control hydraulic shovel or other attachments.
- Uses bucket to dig trenches and holes of specified length, depth, and width, remove loosened material and put in piles or transport trucks.
- May need to understand and utilize GPS grade technology on this type of machine
- Bulldozer – Grade Operator
- Operates bulldozer or grader which is used to gouge out, level, and distribute soil, sand, ore, rock, gravel, industrial byproducts, and other such materials. Also used to push or clear trees and rocks which is preparatory to diverse types of constructing projects
- On occasion, fastens attachments to bulldozer or grader with clevis or wedge-pin hitches
- Moves levers and depresses pedals to maneuver bulldozer or grader and raise, lower, and tilt the blade and diverse types of attachments to clear right of way. Feels levers and listens for stalling action of engine to estimate depth of cut
- Operates bulldozer or grader in successive passes over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified or designed grade or elevation
- Rock/Articulated/Dump/Roll Off Truck Driver
- Operates truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials, such as sand, soil, rock, gravel, coal, ore, industrial byproducts, and other such materials.
- Pulls levers or turns crank to tilt body and dump contents.
- Move hand and foot controls to move truck forward and backward to loosen and dump material adhering to dump bed body
- May be designated according to type of material hauled, type of truck driven, and whether for on road or off-highway projects.
- Front-End Loader Operator
- Operates straight or articulated rubber-tired or track type loader equipped with front-mounted hydraulically powered bucket or scoop to lift and transport bulk materials to and from storage, loading, or processing areas, and to load trucks
- Starts engine, shifts gears, presses pedals, and turns steering wheel to operate loader. Moves levers to lower and tilt bucket and drives front-end loader forward to force bucket into bulk material
- Moves levers to raise and tilt bucket when filled, drives vehicle from loading area to dump or loading area, and dumps material in stockpile or dump truck
- Compactor Operator
- Operates heavy rolling machine to compact soil, sand, rock, gravel, or industrial byproduct materials to a specific compaction required as part of preparing the subgrade of diverse types of construction projects
- Moves levers, depresses pedals, turns handwheels, and pushes throttle to control and guide machine
- Operates machine in successive overlapping passes over surface to be compacted.
- Determines speed and direction of machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges are not formed by excessive pressure. Pushes hand roller and pounds surfaces, using hand tamp
- May be designated according to type of compaction equipment used.
- Scraper/Tractor Operator
- Operates tractor-drawn or self-propelled scraper to move, haul, and grade earth on construction sites
- Moves switches, levers, and pedals to control the loading gate on pan or bowl, to adjust depth of cut, to raise and close filled pan or bowl for hauling, and to spread or dump earth
- Connects hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkage, or power takeoff shaft to tractor to provide power to raise, lower, or tilt attachment
- Moves levers to control tool bars, carriers, and disks
- Water Truck Driver
- Operates a truck to transport water for construction projects, filling and transporting potable water to crews working at job sites and driving a truck equipped with sprinkling attachment to spray water on roadways to control dust
- Requires the ability to make inspections, oil, grease, service and make normal operating adjustments to the Water Truck, and lift/move transported materials as needed
