- Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, depth and angle of cut
- Establishes a system of maintaining appropriate notes and reminders and completes any required logs, calibration records, etc.
- Monitors the feed and speed of machines during the machining process
- Reads blueprint or job order for dimensions and tolerances, tooling instructions, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cuts, and cutting tools
- Sets/adjusts straightener, feed length, and leveler
- Studies sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products
- Calculates dimensions or tolerances, using instruments, such as micrometers or vernier calipers
- Installs/sets transfer or automated system or devices and hydraulic and/or pneumatic systems
- Supports metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties, and mathematics
- Performs quality control inspections on all parts and components that are fabricated by comparing the finished parts to blueprints and other plans
- Analyzes, solves, and corrects formability problems and runs at proper rate
- Examines completed workpieces for defects, such as chipped edges or marred surfaces and sort defective pieces according to types of flaws
- Checks, installs, and sets bolster blocks, dies, and material bridge
- Inspects safety equipment
- Manually moves or uses hoist to position and secure work piece in holding chuck, machine table, or fixture
- Understands EDM (Electrical Discharge Machine) operation, compare electrode materials, discuss electrode machining methods, determine flushing requirements, and relate spark frequency to surface finish and metal removal rates
- Uses surface and cylindrical grinding including basic construction and operation, wheel selection, work-holding methods and grinder safety
- Set sup, adjusts, or operates basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations
- Utilizes CAM programs such as Feature-Cam to produce tool-paths for Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) lathes and milling machines
- Installs conveyors, stackers, and part-out conveyors
- Inspects and submits tryout parts for quality and conformance
- Evaluates machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency or adaptability
- Empties scrap bins/containers, cleans conveyors and/or chutes, and stages completed parts for pickup
- Cleans feed and straightener rollers
- Ensures proper communications between previous and next shifts, with both operations and supervision
- Cleans, connects, and verifies short feed detectors and sensors
- Positions, secures, and aligns cutting tools in toolholders on machines, using hand tools, and verify their positions with measuring instruments
- Measures, examines, or tests completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers
- Measures completed workpieces to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, or rulers
- Adjusts machine controls and change tool settings to keep dimensions within specified tolerances
- Sets up compound dies and operating power presses for high-speed production
- Programs computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools
- Operates equipment to verify operational efficiency
- Identifies problems and changes that could lead to problems by exchanging information with operators, supervisors, and others
- Determines and sets shut height
- Sets tension on slack loop
- Sets-up all molds and related functions such as watering of the mold, knockout, hot runner set-up, hydraulics, pneumatics etc.
- Stages and organizes die-clamping devices for next setup
- Verifies and documents in-process inspections for conformance to specifications
- Confers with numerical control programmers to check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly and that output will meet specifications
- Selects clamping devices and aligns and places die in press
- Removes die from press, stages for storage, and organizes die-clamping devices for next setup
- Uses Tool-Room Milling Machine Operation including vertical mill construction and operation, end milling, side milling, key ways, boring and counterboring, drilling and reaming, and safety
- Sets up or operates metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, or cutting equipment
- Sets program tonnage monitor to predetermined engineering specifications
- Sets pilot release, knockouts, air cushion, and manifold pressure
- Sets parameters of the molding press to the process verification sheet if applicable
- Repairs any fluid or air leaks relating to the mold
- Machines parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders
- Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements
- Inspects parts for compliance during run, makes adjustments, and seeks approval
- Cleans bolster, ram, and top/bottom of die
- Returns or prepares unused material (pickup or inventory)
- Replaces/cleans filters and greases/lubes guide components
- Positions/sets uncoiler, magazine or blank, and material/feeder
- Prepares the lathe machines to process the raw materials by adjusting specific settings, such as height and width
- Orients parts for secondary operations, prepares/positions part-cleaning equipment, and sets/positions packaging for production
- Understands and interprets the types of lines used on shop drawings and part prints; apply tolerances and symbols; identify threads, tapers, and machined surfaces; and develop good sketching techniques
- Submits final parts for inspection and receives approval
- Complies with of all internal and OSHA required safety procedures
